Tips for employees preparing for a development conversation with their leader.
Review the agenda and your feedback
Check what topics will be discussed. Go through the feedback you received (e.g., 360° feedback) and analyze it to prepare for a meaningful, well-informed conversation with your leader.
Reflect on your recent months at work
Think about what has been satisfying and what has been challenging for you. A short self-reflection will help you better articulate your experiences.
Prepare a list of your key achievements
Choose two or three of your most important successes since your last development conversation. Consider why they matter to you and what makes you proud.
Identify situations you can learn from
Recall two or three situations that could have gone differently. Reflect on what they taught you - this demonstrates your openness to growth and learning.
Analyze your strengths and best-developed competencies
Point out two or three competencies or qualities that make you stand out. Think about how you can use them to achieve your goals and contribute to your team’s success.
Define your key development areas
Identify two or three areas where you’d like to grow. Consider how they align with your aspirations and what kind of support you might need from your leader or team.
Reflect on your future aspirations
Think about the skills or experiences you’d like to gain in the coming months or year. This will make it easier to discuss your future growth within the organization.
Prepare questions and expectations for your leader
Consider what you’d like to discuss with your manager — for example, support needs, development ideas, or any uncertainties about expectations.
Be open to feedback during the conversation
A development conversation is an opportunity to learn. Listen to your leader’s perspective - even if you don’t fully agree, try to take away what will help you grow.
Draft your Individual Development Plan (IDP)
After the meeting, write down the key takeaways and prepare a draft action plan. You and your leader will finalize the plan together to help you achieve your development goals.
